Questioning God

Read Time:2 Minute, 30 Second

It really doesn’t matter if you’ve been trusting in God since you were a teenager, or if you’re brand new to the trusting God thing. As you learn to trust God fully, questions will arise.

What we need to remember is that no matter where we are in our walk with God, questioning is OK. Not only is it OK to question, but God wants you to ask the hard questions. He’s a big boy who can take any question you have for Him and answer it – not always in the way you want, or when you want, but He will give an answer.

Scripture is laced with those who questioned God. The Lord is not going to strike you down because you have a question about “why,” or “how can this be?” Some of God’s most favorite people questioned what was going on.

Take His prophet, Habakkuk. He was full of tough questions for God. He basically yelled out to God wanting to know if He was there, if He was even listening. But Habakkuk wasn’t done. He pretty much said to God, “are you really going to let these wicked people prosper over us? Why would ever do that?” Wow! Talk about some tough questions, and some questions that translate right to our world we live in every day.

How many of us Christians have asked God “why?” Why did I lose my job? Why did my spouse leave? Why did my mom get sick? Why? Why? Why? I know I’ve had my fair share of whys. When I lost my first teaching job, I didn’t understand. It was through no fault of my own. It was an arbitrary decision in which several lost their jobs, and I didn’t understand. I was devastated, because I had been so happy there, and I asked God why plenty.

God showed me through this time and others that maybe instead of asking why, I should be asking “what now?” God has a plan. We don’t always see it, but that is where the trusting Him completely comes in to play. “What now” gives you someplace to focus, someplace to let God move you forward in His plan.

Lucky for me, God brought me to the school where I have now been the last 19 years. He had a plan; I just had to trust.

Read: Take a few minutes and read Habakkuk 1:1-5. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Habakkuk+1&version=NLT

Put into Action: Spend some time really considering what the Lord is showing you through this passage. Maybe it’s just the realization that the Lord can handle your questions. Maybe it’s knowing that God has a plan bigger than you. Maybe God is telling you to get unstuck, because all you’re focused on is your questions. Whatever it might be, God brought you here for a reason. Don’t close the door on this devotional until you spend some time and talk to Him.
