Up to Something Good

We are near the end of March, and God has certainly been making His presence known early on in 2025. It seems everywhere you look, God is. Of course we are in the early stages of spring, so warmer weather, sunshine, and trees and flowers blooming are all pictures of God at work.

Recently however, God has been popping up in the strangest of places. It’s almost like He is everywhere. A little joke, as we know He is, but so often we miss Him in our everyday lives that are filled with hustle, bustle, and secular nonsense that at times tries to steer us as far away from God as possible. However, Christ seems to be busting through in every aspect of life. Don’t believe me? Read on.

Music is a place where God thrives. There are so many good worship and contemporary Christian songs that can be accessed through Spotify or 99.1 Joy FM. But for every song there is about God, there are ten that aren’t. Recently, however, secular music seems to be showing God at so many turns. Lyrics just seem to have God’s handprint and crossover is happening everywhere.

Lyrics, even when they don’t mean to, can point to our Lord, and recently this phenomenon has been so prevalent for me. One of my favorite songs of all time is Billy Joel’s “Vienna.” This song is almost 50 years old, but received a huge resurgence thanks to some rom coms early in the 2000s, and is now being discovered by a new generation, thanks to TikTok. It has become one of the most streamed songs of all time.

Recently, I was reading Ecclesiastes 8 for a Bible study I’m in. Verse 16 says, In my search for wisdom and in my observation of people’s burden here on earth, I discovered that there is ceaseless activity day and night.

Ceaseless activity day and night…wow, that sounds like our society for sure. My mind was pulled to the song “Vienna” as I envisioned God speaking to us and the word “Vienna” being replaced with “heaven.” My mind was blown. Take a listen here and see what I mean. This ceaseless activity is often keeping us from noticing God in all things we do. Like noticing Him in this secular song that His fingerprints are all over.

Of course it’s not just lyrics that are suddenly taking on a new light, it’s artists themselves. One of the biggest country stars around, Jelly Roll, has paired with Christian singer Brandon Lake on his newest song “Hard Fought Hallelujah.”

Plus, Jelly Roll’s new song “Liar” is certainly talking about Satan and how he tries to trip us up, but the way to defeat him is to go higher. God is making it clear, He is here through music.

Music isn’t the only place God is showing Himself. Popular entertainment is also bringing God into the minds of people even if they don’t mean to, which let’s face it, Hollywood probably doesn’t. But God is making His own way. In the hugely popular show Severance, the question arose whether innies and outies both have souls even though they are the same individual. You either understand that statement if you watch the show or you are currently lost.

However, it really doesn’t matter. What matters is that people across the country in living rooms, at work, on podcasts, and so many other places were talking about this. People were discussing, and in many cases coming to the conclusion, that God would only give one soul. I heard this very thing from the most secular of all people on a podcast. He basically said he didn’t even know if he believed in God, but He knew God would only give us one soul. You may not have clue one about the show, but the simple point is people were discussing the merits of the soul and how that works with God, and they were discussing it on platforms in which God just doesn’t come up.

Then there is the example of Biblical content finding its way into regular programming like House of David, which has been huge on Amazon Prime’s streaming service. There are those who don’t like filling in the gaps of Biblical stories with sound Biblical creative license, and I certainly understand that. All that I am saying is it gets people thinking about God, and it is evident that He is making Himself known in entertainment.

He even is reaching into the minds of teenagers who will soon be running our world. There are two discussions I have had recently with those young minds. First, if God doesn’t know time, can we pray for our great grandpa who died in World War 2? Some of you just read this and are like “What? That’s ridiculous.” That was my first thought too. But then I really thought about it. God doesn’t know time, He is infinite, so maybe you can. Obviously the outcome won’t change, but what if he was praying for peace for his grandfather at the time of death? I don’t know for sure and it kinda hurts my head to think about it. But I was thinking about it and so was he.

Question Two: what about marriage in heaven? Will you and your wife still be married? How does that work? Well that ended up being a lengthy discussion about knowing our loved ones in Heaven and what that means and so on. Here’s the thing: it doesn’t really matter if you don’t know the answer to those questions. In fact, I think the only one who knows the answer for sure currently resides in Heaven. What matters is that the next generation to run the world is thinking deep, profound questions about God and faith.

I know some will look at this and just say it is just a bunch of wishful thinking. That could be true, but it isn’t. The first three blogs of this year have had a common thread running through them and that is God is up to something in 2025. Do I know what that is? Nope, I certainly am no prophet. But I’m also no dummy.

In this broken, hurting world, God is still here. God is reaching out to us saying, “I’m right here. Think about me, know me, love me, and let me fix your world.” There is no doubt that as He has done so many other times throughout history, God is reaching out to His children. I hope those children recognize that their Heavenly Father is right there just waiting for them to take His hand. Until next month…
